Maple Ridge Groundbreaking

Habitat staff, Board Members, Fairfax County politicians and future homeowners of Maple Ridge condominiums break ground at the new building site!

On Saturday July 12th, 2008, Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia broke ground on its newest build site, Maple Ridge Condominiums.  Located in Fairfax, right next to the 12-unit Westbrook Forest Condominiums, Maple Ridge will be the future home of nine deserving families from the Northern Virginia area.  These future homeowners were joined on this hot and sunny summer day by previous Habitat homeowners, as well as Habitat supporters, and Fairfax County officials Gerry Connolly, Cathy Hudgins and Pete Murphy.  Prior to the ceremony, the block party style event featured live music by the jazz band Common Ground in addition to games and face painting for the children, and a raffle which raised over $750 for the Habitat affiliate. Overall, it was a fun family day!

The event featured a ceremony which not only celebrated the beginning of the new build but recognized some of our great volunteers from the past year.  It began by recognizing Mitch Opaliski for his dedication and excellent years of service as the Habitat Board of Directors President and continued by presenting the three volunteer recognition awards for the past year.  This year, the President’s Award was presented to Wray Sexton, the Bob Nicholson Volunteer Award was given to Al Conte, and the Dream Builder award was presented to Michelle Dandrea Lowell. After a beautiful blessing of the land by Reverend Sandi Evans Rogers of Columbia Baptist Church, Habitat Board members and representatives from the event sponsor Celerity, along with the Rodriguez family, a future Maple Ridge homeowner, performed the ceremonial digging to represent the beginning of construction!

Special thanks to everyone who came out and contributed to the success of the event, especially the Special Events Committee and each of the event sponsors.  Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia is excited to begin construction on the new condominium build and looks forward to working with all the volunteers and sponsors throughout the upcoming year.  Current Maple Ridge Sponsors include: Columbia Baptist Church in partnership with Northstar Church Network, Fairways to Habitat, Frank Palmer, Archstone, Capital One, McLean Interfaith Coalition, National Capital Presbytery, Venable, Vienna Presbyterian Church, and many others.

"When you look at a Habitat worksite on a Saturday it looks like hundreds of ants on a sugar cube. It's organized chaos and I love every minute of it."
