For 30 years, Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia (Habitat NOVA) has helped low-to-moderate income families achieve the dream of affordable homeownership. We have built or rehabilitated more than 100 homes and improved the lives of hundreds of people living right here in our local communities.
We serve families whose income is 40-80% of the area median income (AMI), precluding them from ownership on the open market. Habitat NOVA homeowners invest in their future by helping build their own homes. Working along with our dedicated corporate and individual volunteers, these families put in more than 400+ hours in “sweat equity” to build their home.
Habitat NOVA performs site selection/acquisition, coordination of professional services, home construction, mortgage lending and underwriting, as well as family selection. We serve families in Fairfax and Arlington counties as well as the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, and Falls Church.
Our goal is to ensure affordability and sustainability for the Habitat NOVA first-time home buyer. Thanks to the generosity of our volunteers and donors, we keep our construction costs low. And by being good stewards of our resources, we are proud to provide mortgages, with a 1% down payment, to our future Habitat NOVA homeowners
All Are Welcome
Habitat NOVA has an open-door policy: All who believe that everyone needs a decent, affordable place to live are welcome to help with the work, regardless of race, religion, age, gender, political views, or any of the other distinctions that too often divide people. In short, we welcome volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds and also serves people in need of decent housing regardless of race or religion.
As a matter of policy, Habitat for Humanity International and its affiliated organizations do not proselytize. This means that Habitat NOVA will not offer assistance on the expressed or implied condition that people must either adhere to or convert to a particular faith, or listen and respond to messaging designed to induce conversion to a particular faith.
Does Habitat NOVA Give Homes Away?
No, Habitat NOVA does not give away homes. We are committed to giving hard-working families a hand-up, not a handout. All are welcome to apply to be Habitat NOVA homeowners and to collaborate on the build, regardless of background, race, or religion. For information about homeownership applications, click here.
